Mounting Cost Of Pandemic On Council To Be Discussed

Written by on 30th November 2020

The mounting impact of the pandemic on Harborough District’s Council’s finances has been revealed.

Lost income and increased expenditure now totals £3.2m.

The government has only covered some of this, leaving the authority with a funding gap of £1.8m

Unless it receives more cash, or can make savings, bosses will have to use money in reserves to cover just under £1m of that.

The Council has lost income of £504,000 due to the suspension of car parking charges for three months and reduced usage of car parks during the pandemic.

It has also had to provide over £700,000 to the operator of district’s leisure centres, to enable them to re-open.

Bosses are continuing to press the government for more financial support.

The situation will be discussed by the Council’s Cabinet at a meeting this evening.
