Works Underway To Create New Flats in MHBS Base
Written by HFM News on 30th July 2026
Work has begun on the redevelopment of Market Harborough Building Society’s historic base, including the creation of five new flats for prospective first-time buyers.
The major project will deliver a significantly larger branch, a new accessible entrance from the rear courtyard and dedicated community facilities for local groups.
The five self-contained flats will be made available through the society’s Thrive programme, supporting local people taking their first steps towards home ownership.
Chief Executive Iain Kirkpatrick told HFM that the homes will be offered through a rent-to-buy initiative, which will include a significant rebate:

The project builds on the building society’s wider commitment to affordable housing, with £2.2 million invested since 2023 to provide homes for local families and support stronger communities.
Construction is now in its second phase, focusing on the residential flats. The final phase will involve refurbishment of the branch areas.
The society says the new branch is on track to open at the end of November, with the first residential tenants expected to move into the flats from January.
Head of Footprint at MHBS, Tim Neal said: “Welland House is an important building in the heart of our community and we are delighted to see work now underway on its transformation.
“This investment will create a modern branch with improved accessibility and community facilities, while also providing much-needed support for first-time buyers through our Thrive programme.
“We look forward to sharing more details as the project progresses and to welcoming everyone to the new Welland House later this year.”
