Satnav Error Sends Convoys Of Traffic Through Villages

Villagers are enduring convoys of vehicles through narrow streets as satnav systems incorrectly state that the A14 between Rothwell and Kettering is closed.

Google Maps is currently showing both carriageways as shut until the end of September and is diverting drivers along country roads through Thorpe Malsor and Loddington.

Although some overnight closures are taking place, the road is open as normal during the day.

The incorrect three-mile closure is also being shown on the AA Travel news map, potentially adding to the number of drivers being directed away from the main road.

Residents have raised concerns about the volume of traffic being sent through villages, particularly given the narrow roads and the size and number of vehicles using the diversion.

National Highways said it does not send information to third party applications such as Google Maps, with correct information about road closures published on its website.

However a spokesperson said it is aware of incorrect information is being shared about the closures and is investigating.

They added: “We are carrying out essential maintenance and repairs to filter drains between junctions 4 and 7 to help prevent flooding and ensure safety on this busy road.

“We appreciate that roadworks can be disruptive and are doing all we can to minimise the impact of these works on road users and local communities. Work is taking place overnight when we know traffic numbers are lower.

“Also, additional signage has been installed in villages to persuade drivers to follow the official diversion route, as agreed with the local authorities. We are also liaising with local police regarding the issue.”

Until 30 September there is a full closure of the A14 westbound carriageway with an eastbound lane closure, between 8pm and 6am.

During the daytime, a 40mph speed limit may be in place on the westbound carriageway for safety reasons depending on the nature of the work being carried out.
