Calls For River Footbridge To Close Over Safety Concerns

There are calls for a well-used footbridge over the River Welland in Market Harborough to be closed until urgent repairs are carried out.
Parts of the wooden structure off Rockingham Road have rotted away, leaving holes and raised planks which are creating potential hazards. Some sections also appear unstable.

The bridge, opposite the railway station, is on a popular route used by pedestrians and cyclists and is privately owned.
Harborough District Council has urged those responsible for the bridge to carry out repairs as a matter of urgency, while Cllr Peter James wants it closed until the work is carried out:

A council spokesperson said: “The council is aware of the poor condition of the bridge and has raised this issue with the owners on a number of occasions. A further letter will be sent requesting that the matter is rectified as a matter of urgency.
“We are also looking into what further action may be available to us within our legal powers, as we recognise the concerns raised by members of the public.”
Similar safety concerns about the bridge have been raised in the past and a series of temporary repairs made.
