Police Investigating Suspected Major Cyber Attack At School

Written by on 20th January 2021

Police have been called in after a suspected major cyber attack on computer systems at Welland Park Academy in Market Harborough.

It has left just under a thousand pupils unable to take part in live virtual lessons with teachers this week, with platforms used for remote learning and emails affected.

The school says it was made aware of ‘a significant IT incident’ over the weekend.

Principle Julie McBearty told Hfm officers from Leicestershire Police’s Cyber Crime Unit are at the school today:

Students have been given alternative on-line learning platforms to use at home while the incident is investigated.

The school remains open for children of keyworkers and vulnerable children.

A Leicestershire Police spokeperson told Hfm: “We are aware of a serious IT outage at Welland Park Academy, Market Harborough.

“Specialist officers are working closely with the school to help minimise disruption and restore their IT services as quickly as possible.

“Enquires are ongoing.”
