Fire investigators have concluded a blaze that killed two people at the Justin Park Travellers site is likely to have started after a cooker was left on.

The men were pronounced dead at the scene of the fire at the site off Northampton Road, just outside Market Harborough, late on Saturday.

A thorough forensic investigation followed to determine the fire hadn’t been started deliberately, with Northamptonshire Fire And Rescue service saying the most probable cause being the careless use of cooking apparatus.

It’s unlikely the victims – who its understood had lived on the site for around ten years – will be formally identify for sometime.

fire dog vanFirefighters from Market Harborough were first to arrive at the scene of the fire just after 11pm, and found the small touring-type caravan well alight – a crew from Desborough got there minutes later and an appliance from Corby was also sent to assist them.

Police worked with the fire service in a bid to determine how the blaze started and drafted in specialist ‘fire dogs’ as part of the investigation.
