Harborough’s Coronavirus Figures ‘Skewed’ By Uni Students
Written by HFM News on 19th October 2020
University students from the Harborough District who test positive for Coronavirus are influencing local case data, despite not living here at the moment.
If they have not registered with their nearest GP at university and test positive for COVID-19, they are being counted as part of Harborough’s figures.
The infection rate in the District currently stands at is 115 cases per 100,000 – below the Leicestershire average of 155 and the national average of 161 per 100,000 – but still double the figure earlier this month.
Mike Sandys, Director of Public Health for Leicestershire, spoke to Hfm:
Leicestershire County Council has made Public Health England aware of the disparities with the figures.
Meanwhile, current cases of Coronavirus among people aged 18 to 24 across the Harborough District are still more than eight times higher than the rest of the population, taking into account those away at university.
Public Health bosses are looking at what more can be done to encourage young adults to do more to stop the spread of the virus.
