Community Rallies Round After Thief Targets 86-Year-Old Lady

Over £800 has been raised for an elderly lady who had her purse stolen by a distraction thief in Lutterworth town centre.

Hundreds was donated in just a few hours, after an online donation page was set-up following the theft in Church Street just after midday yesterday.

The victim, aged 86, was targeted by a heartless man who offered to help her down steps outside Flackies butchers and cafe and then took the purse from her trolley.

The fundraiser was launched by Charlotte and Lee Brown, who found the purse discarded in the verge near to Leaders Way, to cover the money taken, but has now far exceeded that.

The victim and her family have been overwhelmed by the support of the community and want to say a big thank you to all who have donated, saying it has shown ‘community spirit’ is still alive.

Meanwhile, Charlotte said: “We’re completely overwhelmed with the support of everyone from our wonderful town! Thank you so much, completely lost for words!”

Leicestershire Police are appealing for witnesses.

A spokesperson told Hfm: “Officers are investigating the theft of a purse from an elderly lady in Lutterworth yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 26 January). The victim was in a cafe in Church Street sometime between 12pm and 12.20pm when she was approached by a man who offered to help her down the steps.

“She later realised that her purse had been stolen from her trolley.

“Officers would like to speak to anyone who has any information about the incident or witnessed the theft.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101, quoting crime number 21*55768.”
