NHS bosses are looking into the possibility of reopening the Feilding Palmer Hospital in Lutterworth for use as a Covid-19 vaccination hub.
MP for South Leicestershire, Alberto Costa, has secured the commitment after the ageing community hospital was temporarily closed in May, because it could not be safely adapted to be Covid-19 secure for patients.
Mr Costa said: “I am very pleased that I have managed to secure a firm commitment from the local NHS bodies to review the case for the reopening of Feilding Palmer Hospital as a vaccination hub for my constituents in South Leicestershire and other local people.
“I have long been making the case for Feilding Palmer’’ use during the pandemic, and I very much welcome this very positive outcome.
“This hospital is a tremendous asset for our local communities in South Leicestershire, and constituents have often been in touch to request it’s use, and I am pleased that the NHS have heeded these calls.”
People from Lutterworth currently have to travel to Oadby for vaccinations and Harborough District Council has also offered space at its leisure centres in Market Harborough and Lutterworth for vaccination hubs.
Mr Costa added: “I know constituents have been very happy to make their way to Leicester Racecourse in Oadby to receive their vaccine, but I have always been clear with residents that I want to make it as easy as possible for those eligible to receive their dose.
“I look forward to continuing working closely with our excellent NHS bodies to rollout the vaccine locally, and of course, look forward too to seeing the Feilding Palmer Hospital back up and running in the next few weeks.”
