Pub On County Tiers Border Must Stay Shut

Written by on 30th November 2020

A pub directly on the border between Leicestershire and Northamptonshire will have to stay shut when the lockdown ends on Wednesday.

The Wharf Inn in Welford has been told it will fall into the tough Tier 3 restrictions, along with Leicestershire, with the rest of the village – in Northamptonshire – being in Tier 2, where pubs and restaurants can open.

Despite the pub having a Northamptonshire postcode, it is classed as being in Leicestershire, and Harborough District Council have confirmed it must stay closed and continue to only serve takeaways.

Landlady Anna Raven told Hfm she’s not angry, but is shows there should be some flexibility with the tier system, in cases like this:

A Harborough District Council spokesman said: “Whilst we understand the frustrations of some businesses impacted by the restrictions, the council has no choice but to follow the current government restrictions which have been introduced.

“However we understand the government will be publishing its regulations which may provide further clarification regarding boundaries.”
