Warning Over Fake Texts & Calls About Covid Vaccine

Written by on 9th January 2021

Fraudsters are targeting people with fake messages about the coronavirus vaccine.

Police and NHS bosses in the Hfm region have today issued a warning about the phone calls and text messages, which tell people they are eligible to apply for a jab.

The bogus texts contain a link to a fake NHS website, that asks for personal details and bank and payment card details.

There have also been reports of cold callers contacting elderly people asking them to pay for their dose, which is actually free on the NHS.

Anyone who gets such a call is being advised to hang up immediately and to not click on any links in text messages.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “Sadly fraudsters don’t care about who they take advantage of – and the fear around the Covid19 pandemic is no exception.

“Please share this warning to make others aware. NHS will NEVER require you to any give financial details. The vaccine through NHS is a free service, there are no charges.

“Remember the golden rule! Never click on links in texts or emails.

“We know that we can’t reach everyone on social media and email, so please tell elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours about this.”

You can report suspicious texts messages by forwarding to 7726. (Action Fraud)

People are also reminded that the NHS will never arrive unannounced at your home to administer the vaccine, following an incident in London.

Anyone who receives such a visit should not allow the person in and call Leicestershire/Northamptonshire Police on 101.
