A warning has been issued after a fire was deliberately started in a field between Market Harborough and Lubenham.

Firefighters were called to Harborough Road yesterday evening after a group of teenage boys were reportedly seen starting the blaze.

The crew quickly extinguished the fire before it could spread, while police were also alerted.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police said: “A report was received at 7.10pm yesterday of youths acting suspiciously in some fields off Harborough Road in Lubenham.

“There was a suggestion that the teenagers may have been igniting a fire in the field.

“Those responsible were not identified and no reports of damage have been referred to the force.

“The local beat team have been made aware of the incident and will monitor.”

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service says such actions can have severe consequences during the current warm and dry conditions, with grass, woodland and undergrowth able to ignite within seconds.

The fire service says dry conditions mean fires can spread rapidly, putting wildlife, the environment and nearby properties at risk.
