Secondary School Places Announced For Leics & Northants

Nearly 90% of primary school children across Leicestershire and over 80% n Northamptonshire have secured a place at their first choice of secondary school.

Figures released this afternoon show over 16,000 applications were received across both counties, with county councils notifying parents about the decisions.

Councillor Deborah Taylor, cabinet member for children and families at Leicestershire County Council, said: “We’re very pleased that almost 90 per cent of pupils have secured their first choice of school and our figures are broadly in line with last year.  These remain encouraging figures, particularly bearing in mind we have more children in the system and parents/children are able to exercise their right to apply for a preferred school place.

“We also recognise that not everyone has secured one of their preferred choices and advise anyone needing advice to get in touch with our admissions service as soon as possible, to discuss what options may be available to them, including their entitlement to appeal.”

Cllr Fiona Baker, Northamptonshire County Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, families and education, said: “I’m pleased that this year we have been able to offer more families (80.7%) a place at their first choice preferred schools and almost 96%, that’s more than 8,500 children, have received a place at one of their three preferred schools.

“Our growing county means that we are continually faced with the challenge of providing more school places in the future and we will continue to work with our partners to make this happen.”
