Cat Found Dead Inside Cage Dumped In Canal

A cat has been found dead inside a cage in the canal near Newton Harcourt.

The RSPCA believe the black male cat may have been alive before it was dumped in the water, and believe that could have happened recently.

A member of the public, who was magnet fishing in the Grand Union Canel off Wistow Road, made the grim discovery on Saturday.

RSPCA Inspector Allison North, who is investigating, said: “This was an extremely shocking and upsetting discovery and raises some serious questions about how and why this poor cat came to be in the canal.

“We believe the cat may have been alive when he was dumped in the canal in the trap which is a very distressing thought.

“It doesn’t appear as though he has been in the canal for very long, so we are now appealing for information.”

The trap is the kind used to contain cats and is commonly used in rescue or as part of Trap, Neuter and Release programmes for feral cats.

The cat, which was unneutered, was not microchipped.
