No More ‘Free Trees’ For Independent Businesses

There will be no more free Christmas Trees for independent businesses in Market Harborough.

Council Leader Neil Bannister has responded to anger that only those in Church Street and High Street are being offered them.

He says the authority doesn’t have a limitless supply of money for trees when there are increased pressures on other services.

Over 100 people signed a petition started by Dynamic Hair in Adam and Eve Street, calling on all independents to be offered the trees.

Cllr Bannister told Hfm: “Unfortunately the Council doesn’t have a limitless supply of money to buy all businesses a Christmas tree when there are increased pressures on other services.

“We have been able to provide new lights in The Square, and offered Christmas trees and a modest subsidy for festive shop displays in Church Street, which has previously had a lights display.

“The Council is also funding Christmas trees for any independent business in the High Street in Market Harborough, as this is the town’s main thoroughfare, to encourage drivers to stop and shop in the town.

“Going forward, next year we will be working closely with retailers to consider future festive lights provision in the town.”
