New Bid For Affordable Homes Submitted

A new planning application has been lodged for the controversial re-development of an elderly persons’ complex in Market Harborough.

It is identical to a previous one, although this time states all the 38 homes proposed for land off Naseby Close will be ‘affordable’ – a mix of one two and three bed houses and eight bungalows for rent or shared ownership.

A document submitted to the council on behalf of the applicant said: “The proposals provide an opportunity to deliver a high quality, durable and sustainable affordable housing scheme.

“The housing mix includes one, two, and three-bed dwellings, which include eight bungalows; over 20 per cent of the total number of dwellings proposed.

“The development proposals seek to utilise currently vacant land, underdevelopment private residential land, along with land currently accommodating affordable housing, that is no longer fit for purpose and nearing the end of its building life span.”

Opponents to the scheme, which will see a number of bungalows and flats demolished if it is approved, say it will wreck the current community there and cause traffic problems.

The latest plan replaces a withdrawn application for the same number of houses which was submitted last year.

Harborough District Council sold land it owns at the site to Platform Housing Group earlier this month.
