Man On Mobility Scooter Drives Along A14

Drivers were left stunned as a man travelled two miles along the A14 on a mobility scooter before evading police.

The Northamptonshire force was inundated with 999 calls from concerned motorists after he entered the eastbound carriageway at junction 4 near Rothwell on Sunday lunchtime.

Despite drivers beeping their horns and shouting for the man to get off the road, he continued travelling at around 8mph towards Kettering, causing lengthy tailbacks.

Police were alerted just after midday and caught-up with scooter as it left the A14 at junction 7.

However, the man refused to stop, instead turning round and travelling in the opposite direction, against the flow of traffic.

Officers were unable to follow for safety reasons and the rider then ‘made-off’ before they could catch-up with him again.

A spokesperson for Northants Police told HFM: “Behaviour like this risks the safety of everyone.

“If you witness someone doing this, please call 999 immediately.”

Officers are appealing for anyone with information or dash-cam footage to contact them on 101 quoting incident number 231 of 15/12/24.

While there is no legal prohibition of Class-3 mobility scooters on dual carriageways, there must be an amber flashing light mounted on the vehicle and their use on roads with a speed limit of above 50mph is strongly discouraged.
