First Phase of Symington Building Restoration Nearly Complete

The first phase of major restoration work at the Symington Building in Market Harborough is nearing completion.

Much of the scaffolding at the front of the historic building has now been removed following extensive repairs to the brickwork, windows and roof.

Work is continuing on the second phase of the project, which is costing more than £2 million and is focused on the rear of the multi-use building owned by Harborough District Council.

Originally built in 1889 as a corset factory, the Symington Building is one of Market Harborough’s best-known landmarks.

Today it serves as the headquarters of the council and is also home to Harborough Museum, the town library, a Jobcentre, cafe and Citizens Advice.

The council says restoration project is designed to preserve the Grade II listed building for future generations while ensuring it continues to serve the community for years to come.
