Decision On ‘Super Prison’ Delayed For Third Time

A decision on whether a controversial new prison will be built near Market Harborough has been delayed for a third time.
It was due to be announced on Monday, but has now been put back until the start of September.
Government Minister Michael Gove will determine if the 1700-inmate so called ‘super prison’ will go up on land near HMP Gartree and in a statement this afternoon, the department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities says more time is still needed to consider the case.
Campaigners opposed to the new prison
There is strong opposition to plan from residents of villages near the proposed site and although Harborough District Council refused planning permission, the Ministry of Justice appealed the decision, prompting a Public Inquiry last October.
Diana Cook, from the Gartree Action Group, said: “While we are frustrated that this matter continues to linger on, we are taking this news positively because we hope it means that more time and consideration is being given to the decision process.
“We would like to once again stress our strong opposition to this proposed development.”
