Consultation Events Begin On Controversial ‘New Town’ Plan

Residents are being invited to have their say on major plans for up to 4,000 homes near Great Glen at a series of consultation events this week.

The first takes place this afternoon at Great Glen Village Hall, with a second event in Stoughton tomorrow, as developers Urban & Civic and Homes England set out early proposals for over 900 acres of land north of Great Glen and east of Oadby.

Both events are on between 3pm and 7pm.

Campaigners have raised concerns about the impact on roads, infrastructure and the surrounding countryside, with some likening the scheme to a new town.

More than 2,300 objections have already been submitted.

The developers say the proposals would deliver high-quality homes and supporting infrastructure, including schools, open space, healthcare provision, transport links and new community facilities.

The land at Stretton Hall is identified for development in Harborough District Council’s proposed Local Plan, further consultation events will continue across the coming weeks.

Planning documents show the site straddles the boundary between Harborough District Council and Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, with identical planning applications expected to be submitted to both authorities.

Developers say the land has been earmarked under the government’s New Homes Accelerator Programme, which aims to deliver 1.5 million new homes during the current parliamentary term.
