Change of plans for tunnel lights
Written by HFM on 2nd March 2020
Plans to help cyclists by putting lights inside a former railway tunnel
in our area have been scrapped.
Daventry District Councillors were considering making improvements to
the 525 yard Kelmarsh Tunnel – which is now part of the Brampton Valley
Way cycle route.
The £50,000 scheme would have seen lighting installed for riders and
pedestrians – to improve safety on the former railway line between
Market Harborough and the edge of Northampton.
However, a full meeting of the Council has decided spending the money
would be “unwise and premature” because there are now proposals to
reopen the line.
The tunnel was previously used for trains between 1859 and 1981 – before
being converted to a cycleway.
