New Council Waste Depot Given Planning Approval

Planning permission has been granted for a new multi-million-pound council depot near Great Bowden.
The larger facility will be built on part of the existing base used by Harborough District Council’s waste contractor on Welham Lane, next to the A6.
The scheme is expected to cost around £3.5 million, and councillors unanimously approved the application at a meeting last night.

The new depot will be used to store refuse lorries and other operational vehicles, but will not process or transfer waste.
The plans involve extending the existing operational site into the adjoining field and demolishing two existing buildings.
They will be replaced with a maintenance shed, staff welfare facilities, external storage, vehicle washing and refuelling areas, along with parking for staff, visitors and the waste collection fleet.
The council says bringing its kerbside fleet together in one location will reduce vehicle movements between different sites and improve operational efficiency.
It says the facility will also provide improved staff facilities and allow for future changes to the fleet, including the potential introduction of electric vehicles and renewable technologies such as solar panels.
