Man arrested after dramatic van crash near Market Harborough

A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving following a dramatic crash near Market Harborough at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to the A4304 Harborough Road, at Lubenham Hill, just before 11.30pm on Saturday after a white Ford Transit van left the road, ploughed through around 30 metres of fencing and flipped onto its roof behind the Archway Health & Wellbeing centre.

Police have confirmed a 38-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Archway Health & Wellbeing owner Alec Welton, who lives on the site and was woken by the crash, said he feared the worst.

He said: “By the time I had rushed to our front door the driver had scrambled out of the van and up the bank to the roadside. Given the sound of the crash I was expecting to find a dead body, so I was relieved he appeared to have only suffered minor cuts.”

Mr Welton said neighbours took the driver into their home and called an ambulance before he left the scene.

The force of the impact destroyed around 30 metres of fencing, with debris being thrown onto both sides of the property.

Because the van was leaking fuel and had come to rest just a few metres from the building, the residents were prevented from re-entering their home until firefighters had made the area safe.
