Part of Brampton Valley Way closes for six weeks

Walkers and cyclists are being warned that part of the Brampton Valley Way near Market Harborough is closed for the next six weeks.
The closure affects Oxendon Tunnel and a short section of the trail while major resurfacing and drainage improvements are carried out. The nearby car park is also closed for the duration of the works.
West Northamptonshire Council says temporary repairs have been made to the tunnel’s footpath for several years, but more substantial work is now needed to restore a safe, level surface for pedestrians and cyclists.
The project on the former railway line includes excavating the existing path, installing a new sub-base and laying a durable new surface throughout the tunnel.

The timing of the work has also been carefully planned because bats occupy the tunnel, with the closure taking place under a licence issued by Natural England.
Councillor Nigel Stansfield, West Northamptonshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Waste, said: “Oxendon Tunnel forms an integral part of the Brampton Valley Way, which is valued by local people and visitors alike as a popular route for cycling and walking.
“We apologise for the inconvenience these works will cause. However, this essential improvement work will preserve the historic tunnel and ensure the route can remain open and continue to be enjoyed for decades to come.”
The closure runs from today until 21 August.
The council says clearly signed diversions are in place, although the 1.6-kilometre route includes sloping ground, steps and four stiles, making it unsuitable for cyclists, wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The rest of the Brampton Valley Way, including Kelmarsh Tunnel, remains open.
