Sporting success earns Welland Park Academy national award

Welland Park Academy in Market Harborough is celebrating after receiving the School Games Gold Mark for the second year running.

The national award recognises schools for their commitment to competitive sport, physical activity and providing opportunities for students to get involved.

Head of PE Jason Button said he was delighted the hard work of staff and students had been recognised.

Students at the academy have represented the school in a wide range of inter-school competitions, supported by staff and pupil leaders who help organise sporting events.

The school’s sporting achievements have also been recognised by the South Leicestershire School Sports Partnership, with PE teacher and Head of Year Sam Blades named as a Coach of the Year finalist, while student Ollie Dovey has been shortlisted for Sports Personality of the Year.

Headteacher Pete Leatherland said: “We are delighted this recognition reflects the strength of our PE provision.

“Alongside excellent academic outcomes, we place equal value on fitness, teamwork and wider development, and this award highlights our all-round approach.”

The School Games Gold Mark is awarded across areas including participation, competition, workforce and clubs, recognising schools that offer a broad and inclusive sporting programme.
