Two Market Harborough schools need crossing patrol officers

Two schools in Market Harborough are looking for new school crossing patrol officers as part of a countywide recruitment campaign.

Leicestershire County Council is aiming to fill 32 vacancies across the county, including posts at Little Bowden Primary School and Market Harborough C of E Primary School.

The council says the role, often known as a “lollipop person”, can be challenging but rewarding, helping keep children safe on their journey to and from school.

Crossing patrol officers work two shifts a day, usually around 35 minutes in the morning and afternoon, operating crossings during busy school travel times.

The recruitment drive comes as the council thanked its existing crossing patrol teams for their long service at a special ceremony.

Crossing patrols from across Leicestershire received awards for five, ten, 15 and 30 years’ service, with one member of the team recognised for more than 50 years in the role.

Councillor Andrew Hamilton-Gray, Leicestershire County Council’s cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said crossing patrols are a “hugely important” part of local communities, helping to keep children safe.

The council says the role can also provide benefits beyond road safety, with many patrol officers enjoying being outdoors, staying active and remaining connected to their communities.

Applicants must be aged 18 or over and will receive training, a uniform and support from the council.
