Harborough Councillors To Consider £1m Heritage Fund

Harborough District councillors are set to consider plans for a new £1 million grant scheme to help protect and restore historic buildings and heritage sites across the district.
The proposal, due to be discussed at tonight’s full council meeting, would provide funding for capital projects involving important heritage assets, including listed buildings and sites on the Heritage at Risk register.

Harborough District is home to 1,419 designated heritage assets, including 1,284 listed buildings, 66 scheduled monuments, six registered parks and gardens and 63 conservation areas.
A report to councillors says the rising cost of living and increasing construction costs have made it more difficult for owners and organisations to maintain historic buildings. It says those pressures have also been experienced by the council during renovation work at the Symington Building in Market Harborough.
If approved, the scheme would add £1 million to the council’s 2026/27 capital programme, alongside a further £50,000 to administer the grants.
Council leader Simon Whelband says the funding could make a real difference in preserving the district’s heritage.
