Campaigners Celebrate as Burford Green Community Centre Plan Scrapped

Campaigners are celebrating after plans for a community centre on Burford Green in Market Harborough were scrapped.

More than 1,300 people signed a petition opposing the proposal, which had been put forward as one option for the park by Harborough District Council, with the main concerns including extra traffic being generated on Western Avenue.

The council says it will now focus on improving the existing green space on Western Avenue, with consultation on-going into what those improvements should look like.

The plans for the park were drawn up under the council’s previous administration and Councillor David Page, the new Conservative portfolio holder for Neighbourhood Services, spoke to HFM after attending a packed public meeting, where concerns were raised:

Harborough MP Neil O’Brien also met residents and welcomed the decision, describing it as a “really welcome climbdown”.
