Market Harborough boxer Jack Gardner on shortlist for Green Plaque

A former British heavyweight boxing champion from Market Harborough is in the running for a prestigious Green Plaque award.
Jack Gardner’s name is one of a dozen on Leicestershire County Council’s shortlist – following nominations from the public covering such themes as war heroes, local heroes, famous people, philanthropists and entrepreneurs.
A former Sergeant in the Grenadier Guards during World War Two, Jack was crowned heavyweight boxing champion of Great Britain in 1950.
Five years later, he retired from the sport to his farm in Market Harborough – with a record of 28 wins and just 6 losses in a total of 34 fights.
