Council Approves Funding For New Temporary Accommodation

Harborough District Council has approved plans to buy additional properties to provide temporary accommodation for the homeless.
The authority will spend £893,000 on the purchases, which will focus on securing studio and one-bedroom flats and a three-bedroom house.
The investment is aimed at saving money on housing people in hotels, B&B’s and private rented accommodations, as demand for temporary accommodation continues to rise.

In the first 9 months of 2024/25 there was a 35% increase in temporary accommodation usage and in February 1,000 nights of such accommodation had to be provided.
HDC already owns six properties to provide temporary accommodation and is in the process of acquiring a further three.
The funding was approved by the council’s cabinet at a meeting this week and Cllr Jim Knight, Cabinet Lead for well-being, told the meeting having properties for people to use is having a positive effect:
