Evacuations After Major Flooding In Great Glen

Residents have been evacuated after major flooding in Great Glen.
The occupants of five homes on The Nook have been led to safety this afternoon.
A number of residential and business properties in the village were flooded after a brook leading to the River Sense burst its banks early this morning.

The Environment Agency issued a Flood Warning after the water level in the river rose sharply, following heavy rain and melting snow and ice.
Areas affected by flooding included The Nook, Orchard Lane, London Road, Church Road and the High Street area.
A woman trapped in a car in the rising flood water was rescued by the owner of a nearby restaurant:
Fire crews were called to assist some residents this morning and the Methodist Church opened its doors to villagers needing shelter and support.
Staff from Harborough District Council have also been in the village.
Cllr Rani Mahal is a ward councillor for Great Glen:
Cllr Phil Knowles, leader of the council, said: “Council officers have been deployed to some of the affected areas with sandbag supplies and offers of support to residents and businesses, with prioritisation being given to the most vulnerable residents.
“We are working with Leicestershire County Council and other agencies to support immediate issues, but it appears a significant rainfall on saturated land has unfortunately caused localised flooding issues.
“Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this.”
Council officers have also been deployed in Broughton Astley after some homes were flooded in the village.
