Decision On ‘Super Prison’ Delayed For Second Time

The long-awaited decision over whether a massive new prison can be built near Market Harborough has been delayed for a second time.
It was due to be announced in the middle of this month, but has been put back until the start of July.
The government department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities says Secretary of State Michael Gove needs more time to consider the case, before making the final decision.
The Ministry Of Justice wants to build the 1700-inmate jail on land near HMP Gartree and challenged Harborough District Council’s decision to refuse planning permission.
A Public Inquiry was held last year and a planning inspector made a recommendation to government in January.
There is strong opposition to the prison plan, particularly from residents of villages near the proposed site.
Campaign group Gartree Action, who want the plan refused, says the delay shows it is still be considered carefully.
