Teen Jailed After Motorcyclist Blinded In One Eye During Egg-Throwing Incidents

Written by on 28th April 2021

A teenager has been jailed for his involvement in a series of egg-throwing incidents in Market Harborough and Wigston, which left a motorcyclist blind in one eye.

Thomas Connors was driving a car whose passengers threw eggs at people and other vehicles on the evening of January the 10th last year.

One struck Marc Toone as he was riding along Newton Lane into Wigston, on his way home from The Yews pub in Great Glen, where he works as a chef.

He had his visor up at the time, because it was steamed up, and the injury to his eye was so serious hospital surgeons could not save it.

Following two operations on his eye in the days after the incident, Marc’s treatment is still ongoing and he is now waiting to hear if he will lose his right eye permanently.

Mark told Hfm he is pleased justice has been done, but he continues to live with what happened:

Leicester Magistrates heard earlier in the evening pedestrians had eggs thrown at them in Springfield Street, Coventry Road and Welland Park Road in Market Harborough.

No-one was injured, although damage was caused to bodywork of some vehicles.

Connors, 18, of Mere Lane Bitteswell, admitted several charges at Leicester Magistrates, including inflicting grievous bodily harm on Mr Toone.

He was handed a 12 month detention and training order and disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Connors was also ordered to pay £500 compensation to Mr Toone.

Detective Constable Jack Thomas from Leicestershire Police, who investigated, said: “Ultimately an incredibly stupid and thoughtless act has led to a man suffering a life-changing injury which continues to affect him and his family. A number of other people were also injured as a result of this act and vehicles damaged.

“Marc has been incredibly brave to share the personal impact which this incident has had on him both physically and mentally and to show the full consequences an incident such as this can have on the victims involved and the devastation it can cause.

“I hope this does help to make people think twice about their actions and the damage they can cause. We will investigate reports of this nature made to us and will take the action required to find those responsible.”
