Arrests After ‘Courier Fraud’ Incidents In Harborough District

Three men have been arrested in connection so called ‘courier fraud’ incidents in the Harborough District.
It comes after four elderly and vulnerable people were contacted by scammers pretending to be Police or bank officials, who told them to withdraw large amounts of money, which would be collected from their homes as part of an investigation.
On one occasion last month a 73-year old woman from the Lutterworth area handed over £10,000.
Men aged 20, 27 and 36 from the London area have been questioned by Leicestershire detectives and released pending further enquiries.
Paul Wenlock from the force’s economic crime unit, said: “These types of offences are borderless crimes, those responsible target victims not necessarily in their own area but across the country.
“Our investigations led us into many force areas and those enquiries resulted in three people being identified and now the subject of our enquiries.
“All those targeted in these offences were elderly or vulnerable who were taken in by the suspects claiming they were police officers. They sounded genuine and gained the victims’ trust. Between the victims more than £50,000 was lost to these fraudsters.”
