Concern Over Leicester Lockdown Impact On Harborough District

A postcode checker service is now available for people living close to the border of Leicester’s lockdown area to see if they are affected.

Leicestershire County Council has set-up the service – click HERE to check your postcode.

Concerns are being expressed about how the new Leicester lockdown will affect the Harborough District – particularly places that fall just outside the restriction area.

It was announced last night coronavirus restrictions will remain in place in the city and suburbs, as part of the UK’s first localised lockdown.

Harborough Council Leader Phil King spoke to Hfm:

Non-essential shops in the lockdown area will close today and schools will close from Thursday and all non-essential travel to and from Leicester will be banned.

People living in the affected areas are being urged to “stay at home as much as they can” and the nationwide easing of lockdown planned for July 4th, including pubs re-opening does not apply to them.

Cllr Simon Galton represents the Thurnby and Houghton ward on Harborough Council and is concerned people from the restricted area will travel into the District:

A Leicestershire Police spokesman told Hfm: We continue to liaise with partners in relation to current Health Protection Regulations and guidelines and respond appropriately to changes.

This is a dynamic situation and we will adjust accordingly providing proportionate policing under the relevant legislation to help keep people safe in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

“Our approach has always been clear that we will use the four Es – Engage, Explain, Encourage and Enforce where necessary.

“We continue to encourage communities to follow the Government’s guidelines. Please continue to maintain two metres social distancing, wash your hands regularly and get a test if you believe you do have symptoms.”

The areas of Leicestershire included in the localised lockdown are:

All areas of Oadby and Wigston

In Blaby District:
•    Braunstone Town (including Fosse Park)
•    Glenfield
•    Glen Parva
•    Leicester Forest East (East of the M1)
•    Thorpe Astley

In Charnwood:
•    Birstall
•    Thurmaston

Leicestershire County Council says it is currently working on a postcode checker for those who live on borders and are unsure if they are included.

The relaxation of rules for people who are shielding in the area – planned for 6 July – cannot go ahead either.

Leicester accounts for 10% of all coronavirus cases reported across the country over the past week, with 135 per 100,000 people.
