98 Arrests During Drink/Drug Drive Campaign

Just under 100 people were arrested for drink and drug driving during a month-long campaign by Leicestershire Police.

Five arrests were made in the Harborough District, included two at the scenes of crashes.

Drivers failed roadside tests in Market Harborough, Kibworth Beauchamp, Kibworth Harcourt, Lutterworth and Ashby Magna.

The campaign ran during June and across the county 63 people were arrested for drink driving, 27 for drug driving and 8 drivers were taken into custody for failing to provide.

30 arrests were made following collisions, 19 of those detained were stopped during the day and 18 drivers were aged under 24.

East Midlands Ambulance Service and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service supported the campaign.

Jonathan Clarkson, spokesperson for the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership said, “It is extremely disappointing that so many drivers chose to ignore our advice and made the wrong choice to get behind the wheel while over the limit and now face the prospect of a criminal conviction.

“Leicestershire Police patrols will continue operating around the clock on the lookout for drink drug drivers and bringing them before the courts in their continued efforts to help keep our roads safe.”
