Weekly Food Waste Collections to Begin Across Harborough

Weekly food waste collections are set to start across Harborough District in November.

The service will be rolled out to more than 45,000 homes at a cost of around £1.3 million, with households provided two new caddies and a roll of bin liners as part of the launch.

Residents will be given a 7–litre indoor caddy for day-to-day use between collections and a 23-litre kerbside caddy.

The scheme is due for final council approval next week and is being introduced to meet a new government requirement.

The council says a food waste collection service trialled in parts of the district in 2010 was successful, but the full programme was suspended in 2012 due to low participation.

North Northamptonshire Council is also planning to expand its food waste recycling service to harmonise across the region.

It will see collections launched in areas previously served by Kettering Borough Council, like Desborough and Rothwell.

A spokesperson said: “The council is in the process of finalising delivery dates of vehicles, with the current aim to launch in summer 2026.

“The start date is, however, dependant on the supplier of the vehicles and we will communicate with residents as soon as we have a confirmed date.”

A government deadline for all councils to introduce the service by April was extended due to delays in sourcing collection vehicles.
