Warning Over Bogus Texts & Emails Relating To Energy Rebate Payments

Written by on 12th September 2022

A warning has been issued about fake emails and text messages offering bogus energy rebate payments.

They claim to be from the government or energy regulator Ofgem and tell recipients to click on links, which take them to websites, which look official and ask for bank account details.

Several people in and around Market Harborough have received such communications and have contacted HFM about them.

Both Leicestershire and Northamptonshire Police are urging people not to fall for the scam, which comes at a time people are trying to cope with escalating gas and electricity costs.

A spokesperson for Action Fraud, which works with Police forces, said: “Action Fraud is warning the public about a sharp rise in reports relating to fake emails purporting to be from Ofgem, the independent energy regulator for Great Britain.

The emails claim that the recipient is due a rebate payment as part of a government scheme and provides links for the recipient to follow in order to apply for the rebate.

“The links in the emails lead to malicious websites designed to steal personal and financial information.”
