Traffic Disruption As New Prison Power Work Begins

Major work has started today to upgrade the power supply for the new massive prison being built near Market Harborough.

It will mean disruption for drivers and pedestrians for the next five months, as new underground electricity cables are laid to the site at Gartree.

The work by National Grid will take place on the A4304 between Market Harborough and Lubenham and on Foxton Road in Lubenham, which will be closed to traffic.

Temporary traffic lights and alternative footpaths will be in operation during it.

A spokesperson for National Grid told HFM: “Two-way traffic lights and alternative pedestrian footpaths will be in operation while excavations are carried out along the road, footpath and verges.

The work will centre on two areas – Foxton Road, Lubenham and Lubenham Hill, Market Harborough, – and will last up to 23 weeks.

“The project is being carried out to upgrade the power supply for a new prison at Gartree.

“We have been working closely with Leicestershire County Council Highways Department to minimise disruption to traffic and the public, and letters outlining the work have been sent to residents living in the affected areas.

“We’d like to thank people for their patience and understanding while the work is carried out.”
