A man has been handed a two-year suspended prison sentence and fined nearly £2,500 after fraudulently claiming over £10,000-worth of council tax benefit from Harborough District Council.
Ranjit Gill received discounts he was not entitled to over a six-year-period.
The 66-year-old of Scraptoft Lane, Leicester was sentenced at Leicester Magistrates’ Court after previously pleading guilty to wrongfully submitting a claim for Council Tax.
The Council say the case should serve as a warning to others.
Cllr Mark Graves, Cabinet lead for Revenue and Benefits, said: “Our Council Tax reduction scheme is in place for people who generally need extra support, such as those on low incomes and people that are retired.
“This conviction should serve as a warning to others prepared to take advantage of it.”
