Severn Trent Faces Fine Calls Over Market Harborough Traffic Chaos

Calls have been made for Severn Trent Water to be fined after traffic management was left in place in Market Harborough town centre following overnight investigation work.

Temporary traffic lights caused lengthy delays for drivers yesterday morning despite no work taking place, while bus passengers were left confused after stops were coned off.

The restrictions were not removed until early afternoon, and county councillor Sarah Hill says she hopes highways bosses will take action against the company.

Councils have the power to fine utility companies for several issues linked to roadworks, including when work overruns the permit granted.

A spokesperson for Severn Trent Water said: “We’re sorry for disruption caused this morning by delays to removing temporary traffic lights after our teams carried out investigation work on our network overnight.

“We are looking into what happened to ensure this does not happen again and want to thank everyone for their patience.”

Leicestershire County Council, responsible for issuing the permit for the work, has been approached for comment.
