Children To be Taught Passive Smoking Risks

The dangers of second-hand smoke will be highlighted to children across our area as part of a new school project.

It’s after pupils at Farndon Fields Primary School {pictured top} were involved in Leicestershire County Council research carried out at 26 of its primary and secondary schools.

The countywide ‘Health Related Behaviour Survey’ revealed that 11% of children said someone smokes indoors at home in rooms which they use.

13% of those surveyed said someone smokes in a car when they’re in it, too – despite this having been made illegal in 2015 if carrying any passengers aged under 18.

New school resource packs will include the use of soft toys, and centre around the story of ‘Jenny and the Bear’, as the pair navigate different situations involving second-hand smoke from cigarettes in homes and cars.

It’s hoped pupils will then take this discussion point home with them – so parents and carers can understand just how harmful to their children’s health second-hand smoking can be.
