Relief For Drivers & Businesses As Road Finally Re-Opens

There is good news for drivers and businesses after a road near Wistow finally re-opened to traffic after being shut for over half-a-year.

Work to replace a rail bridge on Newton Lane should have been completed by March, but was delayed over concerns about the highway design.

The bridge has finally reopened

The closure of the route, which links Fleckney with Wigston, was blamed for businesses at the near-by Wistow Rural Centre suffering a dip in trade and they are set to be compensated by Network Rail.

The previous bridge needed to be replaced, as it was not high enough to accommodate wires which are being installed for the electrification of the railway.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We are delighted that work has been completed to re-open Newton Lane bridge.

“This work was vital for the Midland Main Line electrification project and it will allow overhead lines to pass under the bridge, leading to faster, smoother and greener journeys for passengers along our East Midlands route.

“We would like to thank residents and the wider community for their patience and understanding while the work was ongoing.”
