Rapid Rise In Covid-19 Cases Among Young People

There has been a rapid rise in Coronavirus cases among people aged 17-21 in the Harborough District, with the infection rate now at 451 per 100,000 people in that age group.

Rates are significantly higher than the population as a whole – currently at 221 per 100,000 – and it’s thought more younger people may have Covid-19 but are not getting tested.

Mike Sandys, Director of Public Health for Leicestershire, told Hfm that with a test facility now open in Market Harborough, anyone with symptoms must book a test:

Overall, the number of people testing positive for Covid-19 across Harborough continues to rise, although the rate in the District is now the lowest in Leicestershire, but approaching the national average.

Latest figures show 208 new cases were confirmed in the 7 days to November 7th, compared with 174 the week before.

The national average is 240.

Cases are spread out across the Harborough District, although a hot-spot is the Houghton, Thurnby and Scraptoft areas, where 69 were reported in a week.
