Plans To Demolish Homes Move Forward

Controversial plans to demolish elderly peoples’ homes as part of the redevelopment of an independent living site in Market Harborough have moved forward, with a planning application being submitted.

17 bungalows and 8 flats will be flattened to make way for 39 new houses on Naseby Square, off Stuart Road, if the proposal is approved.

Waterloo Housing, which is working with Harborough Council on the plan, say a number of residents who would be affected have already moved to other accommodation of their choice, and they are continuing to work with those remaining.

Parking facilities, communal grounds and a community facility have also been incorporated into the proposals, which include Council land that was previously used for garages.

There was anger last year when residents were sent letters saying they would lose their homes under the plans and many remain concerned.

Marion Duffy, Regional Operations Director at Waterloo Housing “We are continuing to work very closely with all the remaining potentially affected residents to ensure that they are kept fully up-to-date with the situation and that they are rehoused into new homes of their choosing.

“If the planning application is successful, no works will commence on site until such time that all the affected residents have all been relocated into alternative Waterloo tenancies.”
