Plans Revealed For £30m Hemp Processing Plant

Written by on 4th September 2020

Plans have been announced for a £30m hemp processing plant near Theddingworth.

It would be the biggest of its kind in the UK and process up to 25 tonnes of the cannabis-type plants a day, to make products for energy and construction industries, in a more environmentally-friendly way than current means.

It follows a successful research project last year, when the crop – which looks like cannabis but doesn’t contain the psychoactive element – was grown in fields near the village, after a cultivation licence from the Home Office was secured.

The hemp will be grown locally

Market Harborough-based Unyte Hemp is behind it – Chief Executive Officer Jamie Bartley told Hfm they are hoping to work with other local farmers:

The plant will create around 30 jobs and a planning application for it is set to be lodged shortly.
