Plans Announced To Expand Gartree Prison

Written by on 26th October 2021

Plans have been announced to expand HMP Gartree so it can house an additional 247 male prisoners.

The Ministry of Justice wants to build a new four-storey prison block on the existing site, to increase the capacity of the jail to around 900 prisoners.

It has launched a public consultation into the proposal, which it says would create 100 jobs.

If the expansion goes ahead, improvements would also be made to other facilities within the jail to cater for the additional inmates.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: “We want to hear the views of the local community before we consider submitting a planning application, and welcome their comments. No final decisions have been made.”

The move is separate to the plan for a brand new prison on land near the existing jail, which was announced earlier this year.

Cllr Paul Bremner represents the Lubenham ward on Harborough District Council.

He told Hfm with the expansion of the existing prison and the new jail creating around 700 jobs in total, there are concerns about the impact on traffic:
