Parts Of School To Stay Closed Until After Christmas

Written by on 11th October 2023

Two areas of a Market Harborough primary school are set to remain closed until after Christmas because they contain concrete prone to collapse.

Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was discovered in school hall and kitchen at St Joseph’s Catholic Voluntary Academy on Coventry Road last month.

The school has issued an update on the situation as it continues to work with the Department for Education to deal with the issue.

With the hall out of use, pupils are having lunches in classrooms and the government department has agreed to fund three additional lunchtime supervisors, to support the arrangements.

All PE lessons have been taking place outside, although a near-by church hall will be used after the half-term break, for the winter months.

St Joseph’s is the only school in Leicestershire and one of 174 nationwide to have confirmed RAAC in its buildings.
