No On-Street Poppy Appeal Collections, Due To Pandemic
Written by HFM News on 16th October 2020
There will be be no on-street Poppy Appeal collections in Market Harborough this year because of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The Royal British Legion have taken the decision to reduce the amount of face to face contact between its volunteers, the majority of which fall into the vulnerable age group and the general public.
There will also be no supplies of Poppies and collections tins given to businesses, shops and schools.
However, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and the Co-Op supermarkets have agreed to collect for the appeal, using their own staff, and the legion will still have a stall in the Market Hall – from later this month in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday – where Poppies and other items will be on sale.
Last year’s Poppy Appeal in and around Market Harborough raised just over £35,000.
Stewart Harrison, Chairman of the Market Harborough branch of the Royal British Legion, told Hfm that although it will be very different this year, he is confident people will still support the appeal:
Detailed plans as to how Remembrance Day in Market Harborough on Sunday November 8th can be marked have been submitted to Harborough District Council for consideration.
