New Bin Charges Set To Be Approved

Controversial plans to charge people moving into new homes across Harborough for wheelie bins – and to replace existing residents’ damaged bins – could be approved by Harborough Council’s Cabinet next week.
It would mean residents paying between £74 and £94 for the delivery of a black general waste and a blue-lidded recycling bin, depending on the size of them.
In addition, if homeowners want a green garden waste bin, it will cost them between £37 and £46.
If the new charges go-ahead, Harborough Council would follow some other authorities in Leicestershire in bringing in the charge, which would save them over £100,000 a year.
Council Leader Phil King spoke to Hfm about why the move is being considered:
The idea was first muted in 2017, but put on hold following concerns, including bins becoming a target for thieves.
If the proposal is back by the Cabinet, it would need to be approved by the Full Council before the charges come into force in April.
